Her Story

Radia Perlman invented the Spanning Tree Protocol, the algorithm that prevents loops in Ethernet networks and underpins how the modern internet functions. She holds over 100 patents and is often called the 'Mother of the Internet.'

How She Got Into Tech

She studied mathematics and computer science at MIT, one of very few women in her program, and moved into network engineering research where she developed foundational networking protocols.

A Day in Her Work

Her work involves designing algorithms that let large computer networks route data reliably without loops or failures, technical work most internet users never see but depend on constantly.

Proudest Achievement

Inventing the Spanning Tree Protocol, still running as a core part of how Ethernet networks function today.

Biggest Challenge

Being one of the few women in networking research throughout her career, in a highly technical subfield with persistently low representation.
